Our extensive experience encompasses various bacterial and yeast expression systems, with specialized knowledge in E. coli and L. lactis systems. We provide access to commercially available expression systems as well as to our proprietary platforms, the Bioneer E-c System™ for E. coli and the Bioneer Lactococcus lactis P170 System™. We can also work with your preferred microbial expression system.

Is a microbial system right for me?

Microbial protein expression offers rapid, cost-effective production of recombinant proteins at large scales due to the fast growth rate of microbial hosts compared to mammalian hosts. Microbial hosts excel in applications requiring quick protein production, such as vaccine development, simple therapeutic proteins, enzymes, or industrial bioproducts. However, microbial protein expression may not be suitable for proteins requiring complex post-translational modifications or for applications where mammalian-like glycosylation patterns are crucial. Additionally, expression often leads to insolubility or improper folding which can complicate downstream processing.

Is a mammalian system right for me?

Mammalian expression systems are typically chosen when protein folding, post-translational modifications, or protein-protein interactions are critical for the function of the protein of interest. They are ideal for producing complex proteins for therapeutic use such as antibodies, enzymes, or signaling molecules that require post-translational modifications like glycosylation.  Additionally, mammalian systems facilitate the expression of soluble proteins and do not produce endotoxins which can simplify downstream processes. However, mammalian expression systems may not be the best choice when cost-effectiveness and speed is a primary concern, such as for enzymes for industrial applications.
